Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel announced Thursday that Justin Zwick will get the starting quarterback nod in the ninth-ranked Buckeyes' season-opener against Cincinnati on September 4th.

Zwick and fellow sophomore Troy Smith have been battling for the starting position. Tressel, however, said that Smith might also see playing time in the contest.

Zwick, a 6-foot-4, 225-pounder, threw three passes last year while senior Craig Krenzel led the Buckeyes to an 11-2 record. He was a leading quarterback recruit coming out of high school in Ohio.

Smith, meanwhile, was the last player to sign with the Buckeyes in the winter of 2002 and was signed because of his overall athletic ability. Smith appeared in 10 games last year, but was used primarily as a "slash" back and as a kick returner and has yet to throw a pass on the collegiate level.
