Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - The National Football League on Wednesday upheld Minnesota Vikings defensive end Kenny Mixon's two-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Mixon, who has started every game during his two seasons with Minnesota, appealed the suspension that was handed down after a third arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol in a 16-month period. He was twice convicted of DUIs and last spring spent 30 days in the Hennepin County workhouse on work release.

The 29-year-old Mixon recorded 62 tackles and five sacks in 2003. He will be eligible to return to the club on September 21, the conclusion of Week 2.

Mixon joined the Vikings as a free agent from the Miami Dolphins in March of 2002. In six NFL campaigns, he has played in 91 contests, including 82 starts, and has totaled 256 tackles, 15 sacks and two interceptions.
