Rome, Italy (Sports Network) -AS Roma striker Francesco Totti sustained a knee injury during training in America and could miss an extended period of time.
The loss of Totti would be a major blow for Roma as the Serie A season is expected to begin next month. The Roma skipper finished third in Serie A last season with 20 goals.
"The scan revealed that there has not been serious damage to the knee ligaments," Roma said through a statement on the club's official website. "But there was damage to the meniscus, which was the pain which [Totti] complained of during the training session."
This has been a tough summer for Totti, who missed most of Italy's Euro 2004 campaign after he was suspended for spitting on an opponent.
Roma has some major injuries worries with key contributors such as Damiano Tommasi, Christian Chivu and Antonio Cassano all currently on the sidelines.
