Bristol, CT (Sports Network) - Long-time NFL broadcaster Pat Summerall will return to the booth this month for ESPN.

Summerall, who underwent a liver transplant in April, will be the play-by-play voice for ESPN's pre-season football games. He will take over for the network's regular play-by-play man, Mike Patrick, who is scheduled to undergo heart bypass surgery this month. Patrick is expected to return for the regular season.

The 74-year-old Summerall was the lead play-by-play man for NFL coverage on CBS and FOX from the 1960s through the 1990s. He worked 16 Super Bowls during his broadcasting career.

Summerall played in the NFL for 10 years as a kicker and tight end for the Chicago Cardinals and New York Giants.
