Tallahassee, FL (Sports Network) - No. 5 Florida State will be without tight end Donnie Carter for the upcoming season, after the junior tore his anterior cruciate ligament in a scrimmage Wednesday.
Head coach Bobby Bowden made the announcement Saturday.
Carter, who hauled in five catches for 99 yards and a touchdown a year ago, will have surgery within the next two weeks.
The Seminoles have Paul Irons and Matt Henshaw returning at tight end this year to help fill Carter's void. The pair combined for 11 catches, 173 yards and two scores during the 2003-04 campaign.
FSU opens its season September 6 against in-state and ACC rival, No. 6 Miami.
