Miami, FL (Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins Monday placed All-Star relief pitcher Armando Benitez on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right elbow. The move is retroactive to July 23.

The 31-year-old Benitez was signed as a free agent by Florida in December. He has appeared in 44 games for the Marlins this season and is 2-1 with a 1.25 ERA and 33 saves.

Benitez split the 2003 season between the Mets, Seattle Mariners and Yankees and posted a combined record of 4-4 with a 2.96 ERA and 21 saves.

Florida will fill Benitez' roster spot with starter Ismael Valdez, who was acquired in a trade with San Diego on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Guillermo Mota will most likely move into the closer's role. Mota was obtained in a trade Friday, as he came to Florida from Los Angeles along with catcher Paul Lo Duca and outfielder Juan Encarnacion in exchange for veteran pitcher Brad Penny, first baseman Hee Seop Choi and minor league pitcher Bill Murphy.
