ORLANDO - Depth was an issue for Central Florida before the Golden Knights held their first football practice Monday, and the Knights are missing three players that were expected as part of the squad.

Left tackle Larry Peoples, expected to challenge for the starting job, punter Scott Sevin and freshman offensive lineman Carlo Rossi were among the missing for various reasons. Coach George O'Leary suspended Peoples indefinitely for an unspecified violation of team rules, and the player's status is uncertain.

"He's suspended until I make a final decision on him," O'Leary said.

Sevin will take a medical redshirt, O'Leary said, after doctors declined to clear him following a calf injury. And Rossi, a member of O'Leary's first recruiting class in February, decided last week he didn't want to play.

"He said his heart wasn't in it," O'Leary said. "I don't want anyone here if they don't want to be here. His mother seemed upset with his decision, but ... it's his decision."

Sevin's injury means a walk-on will be UCF's punter in the Sept. 4 season opener at Wisconsin. Aaron Horn already has caught the eye of O'Leary, who coaches the kickers.

-FIU: Excused absences

Summer school and missing paperwork kept more than a dozen players off the field on the first day of practice, including quarterbacks Josh Padrick and Jamie Burke, who were attending class. Both are expected to practice today. ...

Tight end Joe Struyf is scheduled for groin surgery and could be lost for the season. ...

Running back Tori Robinson, diagnosed with a heart irregularity in 2002, has given up football.

"Tori is on heart medication, and I'd rather see him graduate, get married, have kids, raise a family, get a good job and be walking down the street than to see something happen to him on the football field," coach Don Strock said.
