Miami, FL (Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins activated All-Star relief pitcher Armando Benitez from the 15-day disabled list prior to Thursday's game against St. Louis.
The 31-year-old Benitez, who was signed as a free agent by Florida in December, has been out of action since July 23 due to a sore right elbow. He has appeared in 44 games for the Marlins this season and is 2-1 with a 1.25 ERA and 33 saves.
Benitez split the 2003 season between the Mets, Seattle Mariners and Yankees and posted a combined record of 4-4 with a 2.96 ERA and 21 saves.
In a related move, the Fish optioned pitcher Ben Howard to Triple-A Albuquerque.
