Rolle may avoid charges

Miami cornerback Antrel Rolle might not be charged with most or, perhaps, all of the acts he's accused of committing during a July 11 arrest for resisting arrest and assaulting an officer.

After concluding its fact-finding investigation, Michael Grieco, the assistant state attorney who is investigating the incident, said he is uncertain whether charges will be filed against Rolle at an arraignment Monday. The state will determine Monday if there's enough evidence to warrant a conviction, and it appears there might not be.

"There's a difference in standards for having grounds to make an arrest and having enough evidence to prosecute someone in a trial," Grieco said. "We're still determining what the facts are, taking a lot into account to determine what's appropriate."

Rolle's attorneys have advised Grieco that the UM senior, who is considered one of the nation's top NFL prospects, plans to enter a not-guilty plea with the intent of fighting any formal charges. Rolle faces a felony charge for battery on a police officer and two misdemeanor charges for resisting arrest without violence and disorderly conduct, all stemming from an incident that started with an altercation with individuals who allegedly attacked his vehicle before fleeing the scene.

Those exchanges caused a disturbance in the Coconut Grove area that resulted in Rolle and a friend, Michael Rodriguez, being taken into custody at 4 a.m. July 11. He was released the next day on a $6,500 bond. Rolle and his family, including his father, Alexander Rolle, who is chief of police in Homestead, have refused to comment on the incident.

Since his indefinite suspension, Rolle, who is one semester away from receiving his sports administration degree, has been banned from participating in any of the team's voluntary workouts and conditioning drills.
