Redskins release Ohalete

Ashburn, VA (Sports Network) - The Washington Redskins have released safety Ifeanyi Ohalete, a starter for 15 games last season.

Ohalete had a career-high 105 tackles with three interceptions and two forced fumbles last season, but had fallen on the depth chart with the emergence of rookie Sean Taylor and second-year man Andre Lott.

"It's really not what [Ohalete] wasn't able to do. It's that right now where we're at with the team, we've got some young guys who are going to get the opportunity to play," said defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. "He'll get a job somewhere else. Instead of letting him get caught in the shuffle at the end of training camp, let's allow him to catch on at another team's camp and get a job."

Ohalete was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Southern California prior to the 2001 season. He had spent all three years of his NFL career with Washington.

Taylor, the fifth overall pick of the 2004 draft, had a pair of interceptions in the first pre-season game and returned one for a touchdown.

"The other players had moved ahead of him," said Redskins vice president of football operations Vinny Cerrato. "You have to give credit to the other guys. Players move themselves up and players move themselves down."
