Randall Simon finds out about "bad karma"

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - The Pittsburgh Pirates released first baseman Randall Simon and activated first baseman Daryle Ward from the 15-day disabled list.

Simon, who didn't play in Pittsburgh's 6-1 win over the Rockies, was batting just .194 with three home runs and 14 RBI in 61 games.

The 29-year-old Simon has a career batting average of .285 in 506 games. He spent most of last season with the Pirates before he was traded to the Chicago Cubs.

"I'm a fighter," Simon said. "I promise you're going to see me again. You don't have to worry about that."

Ward was on the disabled list since June 26 with a partially torn ligament in his right thumb. He recently completed a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Nashville. is hitting .276 with 10 homers and 33 RBIs this season.

In other moves after the game, the Pirates put lefthander Dave Williams on the 15-day disabled list with a strained rib cage, and recalled righthander Mark Corey from Nashville.

-Police investigating Randall Simon's bullet-riddled SUV

Police are investigating how Pittsburgh Pirate Randall Simon's sport utility vehicle became riddled with bullet holes while the first baseman was on a recent road trip.

Simon left the vehicle with a ball boy who was to get the $50,000 Lincoln Navigator inspected and detailed while Simon was on the team's West Coast road trip that ended Monday, police said.

When Simon returned from the trip, he found the vehicle parked at PNC Park with at least five bullet holes in it.

The ball boy took the vehicle home with him one night and parked it on Fulton Street in the city's Manchester section, an area often wracked by drug activity and violence, police said. The ball boy found the vehicle damaged when he got up the next morning.

Police said Thursday they still don't know who shot the vehicle or why.
