RB Washington denied enrollment

(sun-sentinel.com) - Bobby Washington, one of Miami's prized signees, was denied enrollment and is searching for a new school.

Washington, who was considered one of the nation's top tailbacks after rushing for 2,132 yards and scoring 21 touchdowns in his senior season at Miami Killian, was granted a release from his letter-of-intent on Monday after learning that UM's admissions department denied his application.

"Bobby and his parents came to us and sought to be released from his letter-of-intent, and we are in the process of granting that release," coach Larry Coker said. "We wish Bobby tremendous success wherever he may go."

While most recruits took visits to other programs Washington committed early, declining to make any other visits. He even attended night school, retaking classes to raise his grade point average with the belief that it would allow him to enroll in the fall.

Even though he's not going to be a Hurricane, Washington likely won't be a stranger to Miami. Sources say North Carolina State, Miami's new Atlantic Coast Conference foe, appears to be the front-runner for his services.

This is the second year in a row UM's more-stringent admissions standards has denied the enrollment of a prospective student-athlete. Last year Nate Robinson, an Irvington, N.J., prospect who was rated among the nation's best linemen, wasn't admitted and enrolled at Rutgers, where he played sparingly.

Along with South Dade's Charlie Jones, Pittsburgh prospect Andrew Johnson and Louisiana standout Derron Thomas, Washington was one of four incoming freshmen slated to play running back.

UM coaches envisioned two of them playing immediately, and based on the way the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Washington had excelled in the teams voluntary workouts this summer, he was a near-lock to be one of the two.
