QB Carter lands with Jets

Hempstead, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Jets solved their backup quarterback problems by signing Quincy Carter, who was recently released by the Dallas Cowboys. Terms of the deal were not announced.

Jets' general manager Terry Bradway introduced Carter at a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.

"I'm on a good football team right now, and we have a very good quarterback who is starting for us," Carter said. "Any way that I can help this football team, I want to be able to do that. It’s a different situation for me. I'm a competitor, but at this point I understand the situation and I just want to help wherever I can."

Other than starter Chad Pennington, the Jets did not have a quarterback on the roster that had attempted a pass in the NFL.

But Carter, a four-year pro from Georgia, started all 16 games for the Cowboys last season, leading the club to a 10-6 record and a berth in the playoffs. He completed 57.8 percent of his passes for 3,302 yards with 17 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

In three seasons with Dallas, Carter connected on 56.2 percent of his throws for 5,839 yards, 29 touchdowns and 36 interceptions.

The Cowboys did not give an official explanation for Carter's release, but there has been speculation that he failed a drug test. The NFL Players Association has filed a grievance, claiming the organization was in violation of the league's collective bargaining agreement.
