NCAA rules against Bloom reinstatement

Boulder, CO (Sports Network) - The NCAA denied a request by Jeremy Bloom to play football at the University of Colorado while collecting endorsement money to support his pro skiing career.

The decision means that Bloom's college football career is most likely over pending an appeal of the ruling.

"Late Monday, I was informed by the NCAA reinstatement staff that Jeremy Bloom's request for reinstatement was denied," said Lindsey Babcock, Colorado's director of compliance. "We are currently preparing an appeal of this decision, which will be heard by the Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee."

Bloom, who started accepting endorsements last winter to fund the costs of his Olympic training, and the university filed the request on July 29 in hopes of getting the junior wide receiver/return specialist reinstated so he could continue his collegiate football career while also pursuing the 2006 Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

NCAA student-athletes are not allowed to accept endorsement money from any sport, although it is permissible to receive a salary in a professional sport and still maintain collegiate eligibility in another sport. Skiing has no such salary arrangement, so the only way Bloom was able to continue funding his training was to start accepting endorsements, the standard for the sport.

Bloom, a former World Cup champion in freestyle moguls, is currently participating in a U.S. Ski Team training camp in the Chilean mountains near Santiago. He has been communicating with school officials and issued the following brief statement on the ruling:

"I am shocked and saddened by the NCAA's decision."

Bloom caught 22 passes for 356 yards and a touchdown last season for the Buffaloes.
