Maryland gives Friedgen eight-year contract extension
College Park, MD (Sports Network) - The University of Maryland has given head football coach Ralph Friedgen an eight-year contract extension. The deal, which was announced Friday, runs through the 2012 season.
In three seasons under Friedgen the Terrapins have gone 31-8, and are only one of five Division I-A teams to win ay least 10 games a year during that period.
"Maryland is where I want to be," said Friedgen, a 1969 Maryland graduate. "With the improvement of our facilities and the progress this program has seen in the last three years, I am enthusiastic about seeing how high we can take it."
Friedgen will earn a base salary of $210,790 a year, with the package per year totaling about $1.5 million. The contract also requires that $1 million be paid to the university if the coach leaves for similar position at any other college or professional team.
The most successful third-year coach in Atlantic Coast Conference history, Friedgen ranks seventh-best in NCAA history in terms of wins during the first three seasons.
