Luis Enrique calls it quits
Barcelona, Spain (Sports Network) - Former Spanish international star Luis Enrique has decided to retire from soccer after 15 years as a professional.
"I just don't see myself being able to compete," Luis Enrique said in a statement on his website. "The truth is I'm 34 and I'll be watching this season from the stands."
Luis Enrique made his debut with Sporting Gijon before moving on to Real Madrid and Barcelona. He earned 62 caps with Spain and scored 109 goals in 300 appearances with Barcelona.
His last two seasons though have been ravaged by injuries. He still managed to win two league championships and two Spanish Cups with Barcelona during his career, and another league title while playing for Real Madrid.
Luis Enrique fielded offers from a number of English, French, and Spanish clubs, including his former club Sporting Gijon, but decided to turn them all down.
