Jets ink Kendall to shore up offensive line

Hempstead, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Jets have signed veteran guard Pete Kendall.

Kendall, an eight-year veteran of the NFL, was released Sunday by the Arizona Cardinals. The former Boston College player was a first-round selection of the Seattle Seahawks in 1996.

He is expected to step in as the starting left guard for the Jets. Brandon Moore, a former defensive lineman, is slated to be the starting right guard, while last year's starting left guard, Dave Szott, retired.

"We're very excited to get Pete," said Terry Bradway, general manager of the Jets. "It's a position that we have targeted throughout the preseason, that we wanted to look at in terms of upgrading our football team."

Kendall will be reunited with Kevin Mawae, a Pro Bowl center who played alongside Kendall while both were with the Seahawks from 1996-2000.

He then moved on to the Cardinals in 2001, starting a total of 36 games and missing 11 with injuries. He played center last year and suffered an injured shoulder late in the year that forced him to miss the final three games.

"I'm very excited for the opportunity to come back east and play for a team that has reasonably high playoff hopes and...expectations," said Kendall.

Kendall said 15 to 18 teams expressed interest in him, but he went with the Jets in part to be closer to home.

"There were quite a few teams in the bidding, but ultimately the Jets presented me the best offer," he said.
