James says Dolphins will have to wait

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (sun-sentinel.com) · Edgerrin James has big plans this year. He wants to win a Super Bowl, prove he's still among the NFL's elite running backs and maybe even win a third rushing title.

So Miami will have to wait.

James said Monday he intended to play out the final year of his contract with the Indianapolis Colts, dispelling any notion he would seek a trade to the Dolphins.

"When next year comes, I'll worry about next year," James said. "Right now, I'm here, so I'll worry about that."

James is one of the key components in the Colts' potent offense. He won rushing titles in 1999 and 2000 and last season produced the third 1,000-yard season in his five-year career.

But after Ricky Williams stunned the Dolphins last month by announcing his retirement, James, who played college football at Miami and still trains there in the offseason, was mentioned in trade speculation.

After the Colts' first practice Monday, James laughed it off.

"It's entertainment," he said. "I look at it as another comedy show."

While James acknowledged he has friends with the Dolphins and his family and friends would prefer he be closer to home, he was all business at camp.

"Everybody knows about me," James said. "If I don't want to be somewhere, I wouldn't be there."

Team president Bill Polian has said James would not be traded even though he could become an unrestricted free agent after the season. The Colts would receive no compensation if he signed with another team.
