Jaguars sever ties with Hugh Douglas

Jacksonville, FL (Sports Network) - The Jacksonville Jaguars cut another defensive end, this time releasing veteran Hugh Douglas on Monday.

A week after cutting defensive end Tony Brackens, the Jags shook up their defensive line again in order to save the team some considerable cash. Douglas, who joined Jacksonville as a free agent prior to the 2003 campaign, was slated to earn $3.345 million this season.

His salary cap hit would have been $4.545 million, but is now trimmed to $1.2 million of prorated bonus amortization. The remainder of Douglas' bonus amortization after the 2004 season -- $3.6 million -- will be charged to the club's 2005 salary cap.

Douglas had a less than stellar preseason, registering only four total tackles and four quarterback pressures. He also had no sacks. In his only season with the Jaguars in 2003, Douglas started all 16 games and notched 27 tackles (23 solo), 3 1/2 sacks and two forced fumbles.

The Central State product was the 16th overall pick in the 1995 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. He spent three years in the Big Apple before playing five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Douglas, 33, was acquired by the Eagles in a trade with the Jets in March 1998 in exchange for Philadelphia's second and fifth-round draft choices that year.

His best season came in 2000, when he compiled 56 tackles and 15 sacks. In 122 games (106 starts), Douglas has totaled 345 tackles (281 solo), 77 sacks and 15 forced fumbles.

Meanwhile, the Jaguars released quarterback Doug Johnson, wide receiver Jimmy Redmond and running back Frank Moreau. The team is expected to place rookie linebacker Jorge Cordova on injured reserve.
