Jags release Brackens again
Jacksonville, FL (Sports Network) - The Jacksonville Jaguars released veteran defensive end Tony Brackens for the second time this season Sunday.
Brackens, the franchise's sack leader, was let go by the Jaguars this spring before signing a one-year contract for $1.025 million on June 1.
The eight-year veteran, who recorded 55 sacks, missed two weeks of practice and Jacksonville's first two preseason games with a torn calf muscle.
"We appreciate the way he worked," Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said. "The pressure he put on himself; he was his own worst enemy. I felt it was the right thing to do, once we made that decision."
Last season, the 6-4, 265-pound Brackens started 15 games and posted a team-high six sacks. He has started 75 of 107 career games.
Brackens, who also underwent offseason meniscus surgery on his right knee, had his best season in 1999 when he had 12 sacks and was selected to the Pro Bowl.
Jacksonville also cut journeyman kicker Jeff Chandler, who missed two field goal attempts in Friday night's preseason win over Tampa Bay.
