Hurricanes Roundup 8/22/04

(hurricanesports.com) - The Miami football team concluded its second week of practice on Saturday with a two-hour workout in full pads on the Greentree Practice Fields.

"It was a warm practice today," Miami head coach Larry Coker said. "It was a good day for us. We got a lot of work done on the two-minute offense, which we needed. I still think the offense is getting better. As a team, we are really running well and chasing the ball well on defense. I like what I see with the linebackers."

Miami's scrimmage earlier in the week also has the fourth-year head coach encouraged with his defenses' tackling abilities.

"I think the one thing that I was encouraged about out of the scrimmage the other day was I thought we tackled well," Coker said. "For a first scrimmage, a live scrimmage, usually you are going to miss a lot of tackles, and we didn't miss many tackles. We tackled well."

Starting quarterback Brock Berlin continues to improve, and the senior from Shreveport, La., did an excellent job running Miami's two-minute offense on Saturday.

"On offense, I think Berlin had a heck of a day, and the two-minute offense did a nice job," Coker said. "I think the receivers are really starting to step up and the tight ends continue to play well."

- The Hurricanes will take a day off on Sunday, marking the first off day since practice began on August 10. Miami will have its final two-a-day practices on Monday with the morning workout scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and the afternoon practice set for 3:30 p.m. All Hurricanes' practices are closed to the public for the remainder of the year.

Miami opens the regular season on Monday night, Sept. 6 against Florida State in the Orange Bowl. For more ticket information visit www.hurricanesports.com or call 1-800-GO-CANES.
