Gibbs returns with a victory
Canton, OH (Sports Network) - Ola Kimrin kicked a 39-yard field goal as time expired to give the Washington Redskins a 20-17 victory over the Denver Broncos in the Hall of Fame Game at Fawcett Stadium.
Sean Taylor returned an interception for a score and Tim Hasselbeck threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Gari Scott to give head coach Joe Gibbs a victory in his return to the Washington sideline.
Taylor, the fifth overall pick in the 2004 draft, had two interceptions. "I'll tell you what, he looked good," said Hall of Famer Gibbs.
Hasselbeck finished 7-of-10 passing for 118 yards and marched the Redskins from their own 13-yard line and into field goal range in the final 1:26.
Mark Brunell completed 4-of-8 passes for 18 yards in his Redskins' debut. Sultan McCullough led Washington's ground attack with 37 yards on eight carries.
Jason Elam kicked three field goals for the Broncos and Quentin Griffin gained 46 yards on six carries in the loss.
Jeb Putzier caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Mike Quinn with just over two minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and Quinn hit Charlie Adams for the two-point conversion to tie the game at 17-17.
Broncos rookie Matt Mauck completed 9-of-19 passes for 90 yards and was picked off twice. Jake Plummer completed five passes for 34 yards in limited action.
Gibbs coached the Redskins from 1981-92 and led the club to titles in Super Bowls XVII, XXII and XXVI. He also reached the Super Bowl following the 1983 season, but lost. Gibbs left the NFL to devote time to his NASCAR racing team.
Redskins running back Clinton Portis, a former Bronco, rushed just four times for 11 yards. Portis was traded to Washington in exchange for All-Pro cornerback Champ Bailey in the offseason.
Washington's Jon Jansen, a starting offensive lineman, left the game with an Achilles' injury and he is expected to miss the regular season. Jansen, a six-year player who has never missed an NFL start, was helped off the field by trainers and teammates and later carted off. A first- round draft pick in 1999, Jansen became a starter as a rookie.
