Garcia planning to call Winslow about holdout
BEREA, Ohio (Akron Beacon Journal) - The holdout of Kellen Winslow Jr. has reached 10 practices over six days, not that long for a client of agents Carl and Kevin Poston.
But it's long enough for new Cleveland Browns quarterback Jeff Garcia.
Garcia said Wednesday he planned to call Winslow and urge him to report to training camp.
Winslow, an All-American tight end from Miami, was the sixth overall pick in the draft. He's one of only two unsigned players in the top 10, joined by San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers, selected No. 4.
``I definitely want to talk to Kellen,'' Garcia said. ``It's been on my mind the last few days. I just haven't done it. I will call him, probably today, and see where he stands. I think it's important for him to get in here.''
Garcia surprised everyone with his strong feelings about Winslow's absence.
``It's one of those things where you need to think about the team,'' Garcia said. ``This is a team game. You're going to get your riches no matter what. It's going to come to you. Think about what you have to experience as far as creating a team atmosphere and a team environment.
``Right now it does not create a real positive situation for him not being here in training camp. We're all out here sweating through it. It's important he gets out here and joins in the mix with us.''
Wide receiver Andre Davis was glad to see Garcia assert himself so early.
``He's the leader of the team right now,'' Davis said. ``It means a lot to Jeff and the team to have Kellen in here to make sure we get that chemistry going. (Kellen's) definitely a dynamic player.''
Not all Garcia's teammates share his urgency about Winslow. Some saw the contract No. 3 selection Larry Fitzgerald got from Arizona that was comparable to a No. 1, reportedly $60 million over six years with a $20 million bonus, and want Winslow to cash in, too.
``He's got the best leverage he can have, seeing all these young kids getting all that money,'' safety Earl Little said. ``He's got to take his time. It's football, but it's also a business. The more he can get, the best for him.''
