Florida Marlins Team Report - August 7

(Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins will try to continue their domination of the Milwaukee Brewers as the teams continue a three-game series tonight at Pro Player Stadium.

Florida went 7-2 versus Milwaukee last season and has captured 10 of the last 12 in the series, including last night's thrilling 7-6 win, as Paul Lo Duca delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Marlins to the victory. Milwaukee has now dropped six straight at Florida.

Lo Duca finished with three RBI and Juan Pierre drove in a pair of runs for Florida, which has won two straight following a four-game losing streak.

A.J. Burnett pitched seven innings for Florida, but did not figure into the decision. Burnett, who still has not lost in seven home starts this year, permitted four runs and six hits while striking out nine and walking two.

In the ninth inning, the Marlins trailed 6-5, but scored two runs to win the game. Pinch-hitter Lenny Harris was walked to leadoff and Chris Aguila came on to pinch-run. Pierre then reached on a fielder's choice and both runners moved over an extra base as Danny Kolb threw the ball away at first. Luis Castillo was then intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs.

Lo Duca followed and Kolb had the new Marlin in an 0-2 count. However, Lo Duca was able to fight off an inside pitch by hitting a bloop single to center that scored both Aguila and Pierre for the final margin.

Billy Koch (1-2) pitched one inning for the win.

The Brewers fell to 42-2 when leading after eight innings.

Getting the call tonight for the Marlins will be righthander Ismael Valdez, who will be making his debut with the team. Acquired last Saturday from San Diego Valdez was 9-6 with the Padres with a 5.53 earned run average.

In his final start for San Diego back on July 29, he collected a no-decision against the Giants, surrendering four earned runs in 5 1/3 innings. Valdez has not pitched more than 5 2/3 innings in any of his last seven starts.

Valdez has beaten the Brewers twice already this season, with a four-hit shutout in his last start, and is 5-3 lifetime against them with a 3.30 ERA in nine starts.

Florida is 29-24 at home on the year.
