Florida Marlins Team Report - August 12

(Sports Network) - The Florida Marlins try to put the brakes on a three-game skid this afternoon, as they host the red-hot St. Louis Cardinals in the final game of a three-game series at Pro Player Stadium.

On Wednesday, Jeff Suppan pitched eight-plus innings of scoreless ball to outduel All-Star Carl Pavano, as St. Louis edged Florida, 1-0, in the middle contest of a three-game set. Suppan (10-6) was completely dominant as he allowed only two singles before being replaced in the ninth. The righty walked two and fanned two and was looking for his first complete game of the year before surrendering a leadoff hit to start the ninth inning. Edgar Renteria went 2-for-4 and drove in the lone run for the Cardinals.

Pavano (12-5) was the hard-luck loser after permitting just the one run on six hits over eight solid innings. Pavano, who had won three straight, walked four and fanned five. Alex Gonzalez and Juan Pierre had the only hits for the Marlins, who trail the first-place Atlanta Braves by nine games in the NL East and are 6 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs for the wild card.

The first two games of this series have featured just four runs as St. Louis won 2-1 in 10 innings in the opener on Tuesday. In that contest, the Cardinals had just two hits, but both proved to be costly as Albert Pujols and Jim Edmonds each hit solo homers in the victory.

The Marlins will start righthander A.J. Burnett, who is a perfect 2-0 in seven starts at Pro Player Stadium this season. The 27-year-old Burnett is 2-2 all-time against the mighty Cardinals. Burnett has lost his last two stints on the mounds.

Florida is 30-27 at Pro Player Stadium this season, while the Cardinals are an amazing 38-17 on the road.

The Cardinals won two of three meetings with Marlins at Busch Stadium from May 14-16. St. Louis is 7-4 against Florida since the start of last season.
