RARE TIME
Ed Perry usually plays only as the Dolphins' long snapper, but he took extensive snaps at tight end Sunday with reserve John James suffering from heat-related symptoms. Perry said it was the most playing time he had received at tight end in "four or five years."
"It's good for me because I like being a true backup instead of just a long snapper because I know what I'm capable of doing," said Perry, who hasn't caught a pass in a regular-season game since 2000.
Perry said he is fully recovered from the reconstructive knee surgery that sidelined him for all of last season after getting injured in the exhibition opener against Tampa Bay.
FINAL NUMBERS
-Tackle Vernon Carey, a first-round draft choice, will earn $6.3 million in total salary this year as part of the five-year, $8.6 million contract he signed Friday. Guard Rex Hadnot (sixth round) received a $90,000 signing bonus as part of his four-year, $1.47 million contract.
-Reserve safety Shawn Wooden will see a specialist today to determine how much time he will have to miss because of a bulging disc in his back. Wooden initially suffered the injury during an offseason workout and aggravated it Friday after falling awkwardly while running.
Diagnosing Wooden's injury isn't easy because metal in his back from a previous surgery makes him unable to undergo an MRI.
-Starting cornerbacks Sam Madison and Patrick Surtain missed both practices Sunday. Madison said trainers advised him to sit out as a precaution after he tweaked his hamstring Saturday. Patrick Surtain was held out of practice Sunday because of a strained groin suffered the previous day, Wannstedt said. Surtain might have practiced if not for the wet grass.
-Wannstedt was frustrated after having to cancel the team's afternoon practice for the second consecutive day because of inclement weather.
The team changed today's schedule -- going from one practice to a morning and afternoon session -- to make up the lost time. The practices will begin at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Both will be open to the public.
-Ex-Dolphins guard Jamie Nails traveled to Oakland for a free-agent visit Sunday after meeting the previous day with Carolina. The Panthers passed on signing Nails because he weighed in at 359 pounds, which was at least 20 pounds more than desired by Carolina's front office.
