Dolphins Roundup 8/19/04

- For the second consecutive week, the Dolphins will have a television blackout lifted for a home exhibition game.

The Dolphins have announced a sellout for Saturday night's game against Washington at Pro Player Stadium, which means it will air live on Channels 4 (WFOR-TV) and 34 (WTVX-TV).

Until last Saturday's 16-5 victory over Jacksonville, the Dolphins hadn't had a home exhibition game televised live in South Florida since August 1987.

As they did for the Jaguars game, the Dolphins are giving away a significant number of tickets to local causes to lift the blackout.

- An NFL source said Wednesday that the Dolphins have inquired about the availability of Cleveland wide receiver Andre Davis but were told by Browns officials that he wasn't on the trading block.

Davis is a starter who caught 40 passes for 576 yards in 2003.

The source denied an ESPN report that the Dolphins also inquired about Browns wide receiver Quincy Morgan and tailback James Jackson.

- An NFL source said wide receiver Sam Simmons was cleared to return to practice after seeing an ankle specialist Wednesday in North Carolina.

Simmons was sidelined this week with pain in his left ankle, which he injured in November during a 24-23 victory over Washington. It's uncertain whether Simmons will play Saturday against the Redskins.

Fullback Rob Konrad also didn't practice after leaving Tuesday night's session early with a bruised knee. The injury isn't believed to be serious.

- It didn't take the young defensive players long to impress a 15-year veteran. As camp Dolphins 2004 comes to a close, Dolphins linebacker Junior Seau has enjoyed watching these kids work. More importantly, the 12-time Pro Bowler feels most of them can contribute right away.

"They are aggressive and they are quick learners," Seau said. "You have to enjoy these kinds of guys because they love the sport of football and they don’t take a day for granted. It’s nice to have them here. I think a lot of them can contribute immediately."

- FB Rob Konrad (knee), CB Will Poole (leg), S Shawn Wooden (back), DT Tim Bowens (back/knee), CB Korey Banks (stinger), CB Todd Howard (ankle), WR Sam Simmons (ankle/hamstring), RB Leonard Henry (quadriceps), OT Damion McIntosh (ankle), G Eric Wilson (knee), DT Dario Romero (leg), WR Terrence Wilkins, RB Sammy Morris (concussion), CB Patrick Surtain (groin), CB Sam Madison (hamstring), P Matt Turk (undisclosed), P Derek Jones (undisclosed) and DT Tony Brown (undisclosed) did not practice.

- The Dolphins currently have 89 players on the roster.

- The Dolphins practiced in shorts and helmets Wednesday afternoon for approximately one hour and forty-five minutes.

- The Dolphins preseason game vs. the Washington Redskins Saturday at Pro Player Stadium is sold out and will be broadcast live on television by WFOR-CBS4 (Miami-Ft. Lauderdale), WTVX-TV34 (West Palm Beach) and WTVK-Channel 6 (Naples/Ft. Myers).

- The winning raffle number from the afternoon session by a Patrick Surtain autographed football is 0396412.

- QUOTES
Head Coach Dave Wannstedt (on the number of guys out of practice tonight) – “We have a list there’s no question about that. It’s tough. It’s really the skilled guys for the most part that have been slowed down. The offensive and defensive lines, the linebackers, and the tight ends are all fine. It’s the defensive backs and the receivers who have the issues. We just have to do what we can do, which we’re going to. We’ve restructured some things to emphasize a couple phases of the game where they are not involved as much. We had some good run work today, and we did some good things coming off of the goal line. We just pushed some things around and we’ll make it up. You want everything to be perfect all the time, and that isn’t the case right now. The guys are doing a great job, and we’re getting a lot done. Today, the quarterbacks threw the ball extremely well. Chris (Chambers) was out here today, and I think we made four or five plays over 20 yards. We had a good day, but it’s training camp and it’s never good enough.”

Head Coach Dave Wannstedt (on WR Antonio Freeman) – “We’re going to definitely play him this week. We’re probably going to give him a half a dozen plays and keep it pretty simple. He did a nice job today and is going to help us. I’m encouraged. I really like his attitude, jumping in here with a bunch of young receivers for the most part, and I think he can help us in a couple of different areas.”

LB Junior Seau (on the defense and its role in 2004) – “We have faith in our offense. We don’t feel any additional pressure this year. We are just going to go out there Saturday (vs. the Redskins) and build on what we did last week. We need to continue to work hard and improve as a defensive unit. We have confidence that this entire team will come together and we will be successful.”
