Cats could lay off employees soon

(herald.com) - The Florida Panthers, who say they have added 37 employees in the past year, will lay off ''fewer than 10'' employees on their business side on Sept. 15 if, as expected, there is no new NHL labor agreement in place by then, club chief operating officer Michael Yormark said Monday.

''It's less than other teams [are laying off],'' said Yormark, who informed his staff of the impending cuts Monday. ``Because we've moved our revenues in the right direction this summer, that gave us the flexibility . . . to make minimal changes.''

The Panthers, who have 125 employees on the business side, won't lay off any executives, Yormark said. The layoffs would involve support staff in areas such as game presentation, human resources and accounting.

Yormark said he is not sure if the employees would be rehired after the labor issue is settled. Panthers general manager Mike Keenan said there will be no layoffs on the hockey side if there is a lockout.
