Boldin tears cartilage, undergoes surgery

Flagstaff, AZ (Sports Network) - One day after being carted off the practice field, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage in his right knee.

Boldin, who found out about the cartilage damage earlier on Wednesday, could be sidelined for 8-12 weeks. The 2003 unanimous choice for the NFL's Offensive Rookie of the Year missed a workout Monday because of soreness in the same knee. He was hurt on Tuesday while running a pass pattern at half-speed in warmups and had to be carted off the field before practice began.

"Anquan had an arthroscopic procedure earlier today to repair what his MRI initially indicated was a slight meniscal tear," said head coach Dennis Green. "Unfortunately, a more intricate examination during surgery revealed a more significant tear than first thought and this required a surgical procedure to repair. The good news is that the surgical procedure went very well and Anquan will be back on the field as good as ever this season. It's a bit premature to estimate a precise timetable right now because it varies greatly from individual to individual but we are looking at what is typically an 8-12 week injury."

As a rookie, Boldin finished with 101 receptions for 1,377 yards and eight touchdowns. The 101 receptions placed him third in the league and were the most by a rookie in NFL history, topping Terry Glenn's 1996 record by 11 catches. His 1,377 receiving yards were the second-most in history by a rookie, trailing only Bill Groman's 1,473 for Houston in 1960.
