Bills backup QB out 4-to-6 weeks

Orchard Park, NY (Sports Network) - Buffalo Bills backup quarterback Travis Brown will not be out for the season as initially feared.

Brown was initially diagnosed with a season-ending torn left anterior cruciate ligament after suffering the knee injury Saturday night against the Colts.

Upon further review, the injury was only a sprain of the medial collateral ligament in the knee.

"The news is better than we anticipated," said Bills general manager Tom Donahoe. "Travis has a sprain of the knee. His anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is fine. It's a four-to-six week injury but it could be sooner or it could be a little bit longer."

Brown's absence still creates a big hole at the quarterback spot behind starter Drew Bledsoe. First-round pick J.P. Losman is already out with a broken leg, leaving the team with the inexperienced Greg Zolman as the only other healthy quarterback on the roster.

Donahoe expects the team will add another quarterback sometime this week with free agent Shane Matthews among the options.

"We're not going to go into the first regular season game with just one experienced quarterback," said Donahoe. "We would not think that's a fair position to put the team."

In other injury news, starting safety Lawyer Milloy underwent successful surgery on the broken forearm he suffered in Saturday's game. Milloy, who has never missed a game in his eight-year career, expects to be on the field when Buffalo hosts Jacksonville on September 12 for the season opener.

"I've been pretty fortunate in my career to be able to avoid injuries," Milloy said. "This will be my first time dealing with something like this so I'm going to let the doctors do their thing and then I'm going to prepare for Jacksonville like I'll be the starter."
